Tokyo Junshin University, a Catholic Institution

Basic Educational Principle

The underlying educational principle of our university is rooted in the Latin phrase “Sapientia in Caritate Fundata” ( “Wisdom Grounded in Love”); in other words, cultivating in our students the desire to contribute towards the building-up of peace both locally and globally — out of a loving concern for others. In order to achieve this objective, we believe that the following are essential.

Character Formation Modeled on Our Lady, the Mother of Christ

The life of Our Lady, as a human being and as a woman, is highly regarded as a model
of love, reverence and reliance on God, as well as a model of self-identity and self-sacrifice, human empathy and tolerance of others. Character formation, with Our Lady’s “life” as a reference point, is our core view of and the very foundation of our approach to education.
Quest for Universal Truth Christian and Catholic values, because of their universality, have been respected throughout the history of mankind as a genuine search for universal truth. And, with the relentless flood of information that we are bombarded with every day, it is all the more imperative that students now be assisted in pursuing universal truth.

Acquisition of Liberal Arts and Its Relation to The International Community

Issues in modern society that involve peace, environment and human rights are at the same time both local and global. The International Community needs people who are capable of viewing the world from broad perspectives with the resourceful insights which our Liberal Arts Program provides.

A Brief History of Tokyo Junshin

Tokyo Junshin Women’s College was established in 1996 as a result of the reorganization of Tokyo Junshin Women’s Junior College which was founded in 1967
by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Congregation was founded in Nagasaki by Bishop Hayasaka and, in 1934, Sr. Yasu Ezumi was appointed its first Mother Superior.
The Japanese word “Junshin” refers to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and symbolizes the self-sacrificing love of Our Lady, specifically, her total surrender to the service of God and others. Sr. Ezumi considered this an ideal model and made it the founding principle of her schools. And, Sr. Ezumi’s commitment to that ideal has been faithfully adhered to by her successors and is now revered not only in her schools in Japan (for example, in Nagasaki and Kagoshima) but also in Brazil.

A Multifaceted Approach to the Study of Children’s Culture and their Environment

This curriculum is built on the all-important ideas of “playing,” “children’s minds,” and “children’s culture” and is designed to foster and further the student’s talents. We provide an environment in which students can develop a comprehensive understanding of children through, for example, Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Picture Book Study.

Furthermore, students do not simply study about children’s culture － they are provided a variety of classes and opportunities to experience the practical aspects of children’s culture. That is why we have included a long-term practical component in the curriculum. Through the cooperation of local day-care centers and after a simple registration process, students can gain invaluable experience by helping out at these day-care centers.
